Public Speaking and Presentation Skills with Dr Paula Smith

Over the past few years, I have been researching, studying, writing about and working with many organisations sharing my work around Presentation Intelligence ®  – which is the art, science and practice of powerful presenting. Leadership from the front of the room.

I trademarked Presentation Intelligence ® in 2018. It has been a wonderful project to share my 35+ years in the industry and package it up into a body of work that is having such an impact within organisations both private and Government (and our booming mining industry).  This body of work has also been the basis of my master’s research in leadership and more recently by PhD studies. (all following on from my undergraduate degree in training and development a couple of decades ago)

I look forward to working with with my clients on a much deeper level in the future to ensure everyone benefits from the impact of Presentation Intelligence ®.

And just to be clear, this is not Public Speaking 101, Presentation Intelligence ® is all about inspiring behavioural change within an organisational context. Presenting, facilitation, influence, learning, leadership communication, leadership development and human behaviour are all part of the Presentation Intelligence ®  framework and models.

I am back and ready to serve you again

Yes, I have been a little quiet of late as I have been totally immersed in my studies and producing my final capstone project. It’s been quite an undertaking over the past 3-4 years studying at this level at my age with the juggle of life. However, as I encourage all of my clients to be lifelong learners, age was certainly no excuse for me to lean on.  In fact, age and experience helped enormously with the work around practical application of theories and with many conversations with faculty and other students throughout the academic journey. So, I am ready to start back working with your organisation, your team and your key executives to help everyone be more prepared for the future workplace challenges.

Thank you so much to those organisations and individuals over the years who have contributed to my work in this field.  It is now time to make an even bigger impact.

It can’t be all about me

Although I am excited to share my news, I don’t want to intrude without giving you something of interest to think about. So, speaking of Presentation Intelligence ® here is a closer look at some of the other Intelligences that have made it into our workforce development programmes over the years.

Gardner (1983), in the book ‘Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences’, introduced the idea that traditional types of intelligence, such as IQ, fail to explain cognitive ability fully. Gardner introduced the idea of multiple intelligences, which included both interpersonal intelligence (the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people) and intrapersonal intelligence (the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate one’s feelings, fears and motivations). He speaks about 8 in total. Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily-Kinaesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalist. (Gardner explains these in more detail in this fabulous TED talk)

Then there is Emotional Intelligence (often described as the ability to perceive, use, understand, manage, and handle or regulate emotions) which was actually first mentioned in 1964, way before Gardner’s book was released, and was popularised by Daniel Goleman in 1995. Hundreds of books, models, programmes, measurement tools, versions and variations of Emotional Intelligence have now made their way into many a workplace development or coaching programme since. It is suggested that having high Emotional Intelligence is useful in managing oneself, understanding self and understanding those around us. Yes, essential in the workplace. Our profiling tool and workshop REL8 incorporates EI.

More recently, Cultural Intelligence (the capability to relate and work effectively across cultures) developed by Christopher Earley in 2002 is making fast headway into organisations as diversity and inclusion become a top priority for organisations. In fact, I will be teaming up with one of the global experts in this space very soon for a multiple intelligences programme. (watch this space)

What other intelligences have you been working with?

These multiple intelligences, although some view as modern buzz phrases, are now well recognised inclusions in many progressive leadership development programmes. Presentation Intelligence ® embodies the theory of multiple intelligences, but looks more closely at the impact of effective communication and leadership from the front of the room.

Many of these are seen as soft skills (although I dislike that term immensely, as they are anything but soft). Our modern leader needs to master these skills to be able to connect, inspire and influence more effectively.

We all have our own intelligence, smarts, gifts and unique offerings for the world. IQ is only one measurement. Let’s hope our education system continues to evolve too so it recognises all the gifts our kids can offer in a classroom and beyond. It’s critical for our rapidly changing world.
